Superhero Movies Opinion: Too Long of a Run Time?

We’re just about a month away from the highly anticipated movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Today confirmation came the that official run time is 2 hours and 31 minutes. This beats Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel by eight minutes.

Whether you are a superhero movie fan or not, you like to know how long you have to sit and stare at a screen for. For some, the run time is not an issue. Long movies can still be very enjoyable as an average short one. But for most, getting up to two hours and over is pushing it. For me personally, I don’t mind watching long movies as long as they are good. If the writing, story, and directing is engaging for me, I’ll be glad to sit for two and a half hours to watch an epic tale. That’s why I’m excited for BvS because I think (and hope) that it will be entertaining from start to finish. Captain America: Civil War is the next upcoming superhero flick that hasn’t gotten it’s confirmed run time yet, but my bet is that it’s going to be just around the same time.

So this brings me to my next question: are superhero run times getting too long? Think about it, as both Marvel and DC keep spitting out more characters and team-up films, the stories are getting larger and larger. This means they have to jam enough story for one sitting that will entertain and not bore the audience. However, Justice League (which starts filming April 11th, also directed by Zack Snyder) and Avengers: Infinity War (also starting to film sometime this year) are both being split up into two films. Which most likely means that each part will be about two and a half hours, making a four to five hour long epic story.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a huge superhero movie that either can’t, or doesn’t want to be split up into a two part finale and it clocks in at about 3 hours. Again, some like myself won’t mind, and others may be a little more weary about being in a theater for that long. To leave with these thoughts, I also want to ask one more scenario: would you rather see a huge story played out into two movies, or would you rather watch an entire story that is four or five hours long?

  1. I think that three hours is my limit. And I’d rather see a two parter than one five hour movie. That way I would get to enjoy the second half instead of checking my watch seeing when it’ll end. Even if it is very engaging, I feel like my eyes couldn’t handle that much screen time. This is all unless the movie has an intermission, in which I would love to see a five hour movie!
