Mother! Review

A bizarre twist of a nightmare that doesn’t seem to end.

Written by Max Newman

Mother! has an all star cast under the direction of Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream). With Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer, you’d think it would be an awesome movie. Wrong!

While strong performances all around and direction to match the story, simply is still a let down. Constantly the viewer has to question what is going on in the story and why. Why does Javier Bardem’s character let so much slide? Why are the guests antagonizing? What’s with the blood in the house? For that matter what’s with that heart? Surely, we’ll get an answer in the ending! Alas, we do.

And boy it sure is guano crazy! I won’t spoil it in case you don’t have anything better to do with 2 hours of your time like say people watch at Wal-Mart. To its credit the movie is intense and keeps it’s audience interested until about the final act.

A supernatural sort, it has pieces that don’t quite fit together and don’t feel right. Yet the movie has a very real, human feel to it as well. The good doesn’t outweigh the bad unfortunately.

Final Score: 3.7/10
